I lived for a number of years in Botswana and return regularly to sketch in the bush. On countless occasions I have seen and sketched elephants standing in the shade during the hottest part of the day, and those sightings and sketches were the inspiration for this painting. My aim was to show the heat, the beautiful tree shapes and the bulk of the elephants patiently waiting for the cooler evening hours.
