Persistence
The landscape holds great depth of meaning and history. As our natural habitat, we have an instinctive connection. The potential for metaphor and analogy is rich. Below the surface, I am saying a lot in my work. It may be personal, philosophical, or some of anything and everything. One of my favorite things about painting is that the artist puts into their work whatever it is they feel and need to say, and the viewer engages with their own response and interpretation. I find this powerful. It's gotten me through some tough life experiences since I discovered it as a kid. This particular painting is very loaded and very personal. It has a lot of layers of meaning, more even than I realized going into it. While it's one of the most simple and straightforward paintings I've done in a long time, the process was especially tumultuous and challenging.
