Two sisters look towards the future. The younger timidly peaks from the protective shelter of her big sister. The reflection foreshadows the youngest emerging from behind her idol to reveal more of herself while the older’s boldness retreats slightly allowing the younger to claim a more equal presence. By the time the painting was completed, the shift in dynamics between the two girls in real life had far surpassed the projections of the reflection and those of the painter (mum).
