Somewhere in Time, Sunset over the Ashley River

Painted for “Preservation Through Art – Charleston” Exhibition and Art Sale using several reference photos for landmarks, sunset observations and imagination to achieve an accurate rendering of today's Ashley River. It was important to me to achieve the light one would feel walking along the shoreline at sunset.



I started with a yellow toned canvas instead of my usual burnt sienna brunaille to assist in achieving the glow for the sky and I think it made a difference. I also chose a lot of muted colors to create the feel of the sun setting lower in the sky than what is usually painted.


I am a member of the non-profit organization Preserving a Picturesque America and hope the proceeds from the sale of this painting helps the community of Charleston and PAPA achieve their goals.
