Done for the Day (Wet Bikes in Charleston)
This piece is a combination of two studies I did in Charleston March 2020. The bikes were from a quick pencil sketch. The background street I started on location just outside my hotel room when there was a break in the rain. The streets were deserted so I had the place to myself as this was the very beginning of the pandemic and no one was quite sure what was going on. At times I felt uneasy because I wasn't even sure if it was safe to be on the street. Since everything was closed I had time to finish the piece in my hotel room. Once I had the values and colors From the street study, I filled in the details from reference photos I had on my phone and I was able to step out and double check my work from time to time. It was a late night for me but totally worth it!
I use primarily Gamblin Oil paints on a double oil primed linen canvas on a sealed birch 3mm panel. I build my own panels using acid-free archival glue which have been doing ever since I learned how to from Kevin McPherson in 1990's.
