San Andreas Transformations
Standing on the jutting-out edge of the North American tectonic plate, within a Rock's throw of the San Andreas Fault, I looked over the Pacific Plate. Named after Saint Andrew, who had undergone a significant spiritual transformation, this land spoke. As the erosions along the San Andreas fault trenches unfolded, they seemed to form a giant X, the shape of the cross Saint Andrew was crucified on, the ultimate suffering for the beauty of truth that transformed him into a saint. In the midground, Soda Lake harkens back to Saint Andrew’s transformation from a poor fisherman to Christ’s apostle. Many creeks bring water from the surrounding high mountains in the winter to fill it up but in the summer it dries up, leaving vast salt marshes in its place. The high mountains beyond seem wisely placed by the creator, preventing the viewer from visually traveling any farther, insisting we stay here, contemplate the beauty of transformation, and accept it.
